Obituary for Mary Alice Cantey Chester
Mary Alice Chester age 90 of Havana, passed away on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 in Ft. Walton Beach, FL. She was born in Bainbridge, GA on July 14, 1928, to Joe and Nellie Cantey. As the third of four children growing up on Mr Joe’s shade tobacco farm in Hinson. In 1945, she graduated from Havana High School. She married Michael Guyte Chester in 1947 and raised their four sons on a farm north of Hinson, known locally as the Tom DeLacy farm. Mary Alice served as bookkeeper and manager for the farm, all the while staying very active in school/scout duties with her sons. She enjoyed being part of the Powerboat Association, taking the family on many river cruises with the local group from Havana and Quincy. As a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Havana, she enjoyed many activities, especially those focused around flowers. Mary Alice was preceded in death by her husband Guyte, her parents Joe and Nellie Cantey, and her sister Annelle Thompson.
Survivors include her sister Evelyn Jacoway (Ft Payne, AL), brother Joe Cantey (Madison, FL) and four sons and wives: Michael and Cris (Shalimar, FL), John and Debbie (Havana, FL), Jim and Katheryne (Orlando, FL), Steve and Marcia (Chicago, IL). Also surviving her are thirteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
A remembrance of her will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Havana on Sunday, Jan 13 at 5 PM. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Havana or local Hospice organizations.
