Obituary for Maurice Elizabeth Peavy Mitchell
Maurice Elizabeth (Peavy) Mitchell, age 98, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and dear friend to so many passed away on April 3, 2018. Maurice was born on April 24, 1919 in Havana, Florida to the late Magnus D. Peavy and Elizabeth Sanders Peavy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Marco Mitchell, Sr. and daughter, Cheryl Ann Mitchell. She had three sisters, Clyde Allen, Thelma Reeves, Elsie Grogan, and a brother, M.D. Peavy, with whom she shared many wonderful memories. Maurice grew up in Havana, FL where she met Mr. Ed. They were married on July 17, 1939. Together they had six children, Frances Gayle Mitchell, Lynn Marie Pipkin (husband Tommy Pipkin), Cheryl Ann Mitchell, Edward M. Mitchell (wife Roberta Mitchell), Gary Mitchell and Terry R. Mitchell (wife Tonia Mitchell). Maurice, along with her beloved childhood friend, Doris Laing Fair Crew, graduated in the first class at Lively Cosmetology School in 1937. Maurice owned and operated a successful beauty salon in Havana, FL for decades, and is especially remembered for her strong scalp massages. While her clients would sit in curlers under the hair dryers, she would whip up a delicious, hot meal for her husband and sons to enjoy during their lunch break from Ed Mitchell Construction. In addition to being a hair dresser, she also kept the books for Ed Mitchell Construction. She and Mr. Ed retired and moved to Lake Seminole where they enjoyed riding and fishing in the paddle wheel house boat built with Mr. Ed's own two hands. After Mr. Ed's death, Maurice moved to Tallahassee to be with her children where she became very well known in the community for her impressive drapery seamstress skills. She not only made the draperies, she also installed them well into her eighties, with the help of her chihuahua, Paco. She loved cooking and enjoying fellowship with her big family and friends. Her favorite hobby was fishing, which always resulted in a delicious fish fry. She was a God-fearing lady that was loved and admired by everyone who knew her. She was the thread that held the family together. Her big, generous, loving heart and spirit will be greatly missed.
In addition to five of her children, Maurice is also survived by her grandchildren, Mitch Stephens, Sheri Rackley, Jeff Pipkin, Julie Canzone, Marc Mitchell, Cassie Mills, Michael Mitchell, Chase Mitchell, Ron Mitchell and Travis Mitchell and great grandchildren, Collin and Savannah Stephens, Kirra Canzone, Caden Rackley, Reiley Pipkin, Bo Mills and Edward Mitchell IV.
A celebration of Maurice's life will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at 11:00 AM, at First Baptist Church in Havana, FL. The family will receive friends after the service.
In lieu of flowers, those desiring to do so, may make contributions to the Alzheimer's Association.
The immediate family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to Sheri Stephens Rackley, Maurice's grand-daughter and great-grandson Caden Rackley, and to her son and Daughter-in-law, Terry and Tonia Mitchell, for their selfless dedication and love towards the care of their beloved mother in her last years.
Charles McClellan Funeral Home, 15 S. Jackson St., Quincy, FL, (850) 627-7677, is assisting the Mitchell family with their arrangements.
