Obituary for Bob Cook
Jay Robert “Bob” Cook passed away peacefully on Saturday April 2nd surrounded by the three women he cherished above all; his soulmate Elizabeth Cook and their two daughters, Beth Hanna, and Jennifer Trudrung. His peaceful departure contrasted with his exuberant wit and passionate existence on this earth. If Bob had died on April 1st, his family would struggle to believe it wasn’t a joke.
Bob grew up in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and was preceded in death by his parents Jay and Effie Cook as well as two siblings, Jim Cook and Martha Weimer. He was inherently playful and though he would rarely admit it, deeply sentimental. He was curious about everything life had to offer except for other women, as “Liboo” stole his heart when they were students at Florida Presbyterian College, and he let her keep it for the rest of his life.
When Mark Hanna and Jeff Trudrung joined the family, Bob couldn’t have been more thrilled. He often said he won the jackpot with those two and often chided his daughters, “Be nice to my sons-in-law!” His grandchildren Meg, Emmie, Reid, Kate, Sadie, and Penny came in succession every two years starting in 1997 and he wanted nothing more than to get on the floor at their level, play and tell them his imaginative stories. “Pop Pop” was deeply adored and loved by his grandchildren. He and Elizabeth always made their grandchildren a priority, even moving after 38 years in Pensacola, FL to Asheville, NC in 2014 to be close to Jennifer’s family.
Bob was proud of his work with the Florida Department of Family and Children Services, but he happily retired early to spend more time with Elizabeth. The two of them opened an antique store, using it as an excuse to road trip together on buying excursions. He and Elizabeth’s travels and interests were extensive in retirement; they enjoyed doing most anything as long as they did it together. One of his most remarkable achievements during retirement was transforming a love of writing into five complete novels, with his faithful editor and biggest fan Elizabeth cheering him on.
Bob’s funeral service will be held at the historic Old Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, where he and Elizabeth, Beth and Mark and Jennifer and Jeff were all married in Quincy, Florida at 11:00am on Saturday April 16, 2022. He will be interred immediately following the service in the family plot on Old Philadelphia’s grounds.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Habitat for Humanity, where he and Elizabeth both volunteered or the Dementia Society of America.
