Bill Sapp – Obituary
William Hunter Sapp (“Bill”) passed away at his home in Quincy, Florida on August 9, 2025.
Bill was born June 13, 1941 as the youngest of two children to Andrew Dixon Sapp (“AD”) and Ruth Woodbery Sapp. He graduated from Quincy High School in 1959 and attended the University of Florida, where he pledged Kappa Alpha Order, and Valdosta State College. Bill continued his education at the University of Alabama, where he received a Masters in Banking and Finance; and Florida State University, where he received his Juris Doctor. Later in life, Bill returned to the University of Florida and earned a Master of Laws (LLM) in Taxation.
Bill wore a number of professional hats throughout his life: practicing law, brokering lumber, working as a CPA in West Palm Beach, and extending credit as a loan officer at Citizens Bank and Barnett Bank in Quincy. When Bill retired, he transitioned from the corporate world to growing pecans at State Line Farms, which was started by AD and Bill and is now operated by Bill’s son, Andrew, the third generation of Sapps to run the farm.
Bill married Martha Brinson May in 1974, and the two were married for nearly fifty-one years. Bill was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Quincy, where he served as a deacon, elder, and treasurer of the session. He also served on the Robert F. Munroe Day School’s board of directors, also serving as treasurer, and was a member of the Rotary Club. Bill enjoyed watching all of his children play youth sports and served as an assistant coach to Dr. Scott Gregory’s pee wee football team.
Bill is survived by his devoted wife, Martha May Sapp, and their children: Carolyn Sapp McIntosh (Josh) of Savannah, William Hunter Sapp Jr. (Lee Anne) of Atlanta, and Andrew Dixon Sapp II (Carolyn) of Quincy; five grandchildren: Lachlan McIntosh, Hunter McIntosh, Anna Gray Sapp, Dixon Sapp, and Wyatt Sapp; sister Carol Sapp Owens; brothers and sisters-in-law Fount and Beth May, and Bradford and Crystle May; and many nieces and nephews. Bill’s family and friends will remember him for his devotion to his family and his quick wit.
The Sapp family wishes to extend a special thank you to Big Bend Hospice and those who helped Martha care for Bill with humor and grace over these last months: Ida Coleman, Sherry Yates, Rod Zanders and Cookie Winbush.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 15 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Quincy. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 10 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Presbyterian Church of Quincy, Robert F. Munroe Day School, or Big Bend Hospice.
