Obituary for Walter Jeffrey Cotton

Walter (Jeff)rey Cotton, Sr was born on April 15, 1947, in Cordele, Ga and passed from this life on November 14, 2022, in Tallahassee, Fl. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin Lewis Cotton and Mertice Wilson Cotton. He is survived by his brother Tommy Cotton (Linda). His four children Jeff Cotton Jr (Allison), Julia Anne King, Joy Cotton (Stephen), Johnathon Cotton (Julie), and stepdaughter Kimberly Ingram Parrish. Jeff had nine grandchildren Meghan King Gentry (Mitchell), Ellie Cotton, Emily Anne King, Jacob Huff, Wilson Cotton, Jasper Cotton, Riley Cotton, Barrett Cotton, Gus Cotton, and one great granddaughter Cleo Gentry as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sports were a huge part of Dad’s life. As a high school student at Blakely High School, he lettered in track and field, basketball, baseball and was named an All-American in football. After high school Jeff was bound for Troy State where he had been awarded a football scholarship. While at Troy he became a star running back for Troy’s Red Wave, being named MVP one year and having records that remained unbroken for decades (possibly even standing today). In 1968, Jeff married his college sweetheart, Judy Lynn Ashurst and started his family in Troy. After taking a break from college Dad earned a bachelor’s degree in history.

Although Jeff had several jobs as he was finishing college, he eventually went to work with Wise Office Supply of Troy, unbeknownst to him this would become a lifelong career in office supply sales where customers became his friends. His favorite pastime was fishing on Lake Eufaula, where he had spent so much time as a young boy. He enjoyed gardening, college football, duck hunting, and delivering baked goods during Christmastime.

Humor and good conversation were present daily with our dad. He had a knack to get a laugh and a smile even when you weren’t ready. One of his standard phone greetings that always managed to make you laugh: “Jackson’s funeral home, you stab em’ we slab ‘em. “

We are all going to miss you, Dad.
