Obituary for Virginia Inez Dunnavant Suber Jeffcoat

Virginia Inez Dunnavant Suber Jeffcoat died on May 6,2025 in Tallahassee, Florida. She passed away peacefully with loved ones at her side. She was 95 years old.

Virginia often said, “Do what needs to be done, when it needs to be done.” She was strong, intelligent, capable, and practical — tough as nails but warm and welcoming. She loved to laugh and to sing. She loved people and never met a stranger. All were invited to her table, and there was always room for one more to enjoy her hospitality and delicious southern cooking. She had a way of making anyone feel at home.

Virginia was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, on November 22, 1929 to George and Lee Dunnavant. George served as a band director in the Navy, and when he was on deployment, Virginia, along with her mother and beloved brother, Billy, would stay with Lee’s parents in Brooklyn, New York. This must have been where Virginia’s love of music, especially Broadway, began. When she was 9 years old, they moved to Havana, Florida, and stayed there until she graduated high school. Virginia cherished memories of her life in Havana.

Virginia met Norbert Suber at a school dance when she was a senior. In 1948, after her one semester at Florida State College for Women, she and Norbert eloped with their parents in attendance. They began their farming life together in the Sawdust community near Quincy, Florida. They grew shade tobacco, beans, peaches, sugar cane, hay, and other crops. They were well known for Suber’s Sausage and Cane Syrup. Virginia loved country life and her role of managing the farm and the home. She embraced hard work, her community (including the older generations), and the farming traditions.

Virginia and Norbert had five children: Frances Richmond, Bobbie Williams, Joe Suber (Mary), Ellen Ashby (George), and Lauren Clenney (Jack). Virginia had hoped to never leave Sawdust but life changed and Norbert died. She moved to town and worked as a bookkeeper, bank teller, and legal secretary. She married Ernest Jeffcoat in 1980 and lovingly cared for him until his death in 2008.

Virginia endured hard times during her active life but always did so with determination and a wonderful sense of humor. She lived in Quincy until 2022 and spent her final years in Tallahassee. She will be greatly missed by her five children and their families, including 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday June 5, at First Presbyterian Church of Quincy, Florida, followed by a reception.
