Obituary for Thomas "Tom" Memenger Cumbie
Thomas “Tom” Memenger Cumbie, 86, of Havana Florida, passed away on October 31. 2016.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church in Quincy Florida. Reverend Ruth Mashewske will officiate. Visitation will be held in the Fellowship Hall at 10:00. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Charles McClellan Funeral Home.
Tom was born to T.M. and Lottie Suber Cumbie in Gadsden County on August 3, 1930. He graduated from Quincy High School in 1948. He attended Davidson College before transferring to Florida State University, graduating in 1952. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Phi Delta Theta and a letterman on FSU’s the first golf team where he developed the “sweet” swing that only got better with age. After serving in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict, he continued his education at University of Florida where he earned a degree in Pharmacy. After school, he returned to Gadsden County where he went into business with his father, owning and operating F. P. May Drug Co. until 1986. Tom was honored to serve for many years on the Northwest Florida Housing Authority, the TCC Foundation, the FSU Foundation, and as a Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church in Quincy. In addition, he was a member of Washington Masonic Lodge No. 2, Quincy and Shriners of Marzug Temple. In 2016, Tom was named to the Tallahassee Community College Hall of Fame.
When anyone thinks of Tom, it is with a smile; he had a wicked sense of humor. He had a special gift for making and maintaining lifelong friendships. And our family will surely miss our historian. He was a quiet and generous man with strong principles.
Tom was married to Nesta G. Cumbie on December 31, 1976; they were happily married for 39 years.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents and his first wife Jane A. Hutchinson and their sons Timothy Mark and Richard Bradley.
Tom is survived by his wife Nesta, sister Harriet M. Butler, and children W. Thomas Cumbie, William A. Cumbie (Janet), Kelly C. McAlpin (Glenn), John G. Butler (Dot), Pamella Butler, Lori B Gormin (David), in addition to nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren and loyal dog Beau.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to the charity of your choice.
