Stewart McRae Hinson, 78, passed away April 29, 2024. He was born February 7, 1946, in Quincy, Florida to Johnny and Lisha Hinson.
Stewart grew up in Quincy, Florida and graduated from Quincy High School. He received his bachelor's degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and was an active member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. While there, he developed lifelong friends with many of his fraternity brothers, with whom he continued to keep in touch right up to his death. The family has heard many stories of his time in Atlanta, much of which involved Moes and Joes. After graduating he returned to Quincy to run the family business, The A.L Wilson Company. Upon its closure, Stewart worked at the Department of Revenue until his retirement in 2013. He was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Quincy, serving in leadership roles as well as singing in the choir.
Stewart’s love for people was evident as his smile and laugh never failed to light up a room. He never met a stranger and as a result had a wide group of friends. He and his friends often gathered to watch Gator football, play trivia at the Fourth Quarter and eat dinner on Friday nights at the Golf Club of Quincy. Stewart was also an avid reader, often reading two to three books a week. His personality was big, and his heart was huge.
Stewart is survived by his daughters, Katherine Solz (Greg) and Mary VanLandingham (Hugh); grandchildren Sarah and Ben Solz, Hal and Ellie VanLandingham, all of Tallahassee; brothers John C Hinson and Alex Hinson (Jane) of Quincy. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Susan Middleton Hinson.
A graveside service will be held Monday, May 6, 2024, at 4:00 pm at Hillcrest Cemetery with visitation afterwards at the First Presbyterian Church of Quincy. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Big Bend Hospice, The First Presbyterian Church of Quincy or The Gadsden Arts Center.
Many people loved and cared for Stewart throughout his life; the family would like to thank Ricky Bass and Sharon Martin for their devoted love and friendship over the last few years and Sallie Fields for Stewart’s lifetime.
