Shirley J. Dyal passed away Friday, July 28, 2023 at the age of 88.
Born in Quincy, Florida on February 6, 1935, she grew up living in the same home her mother had lived in and where she and her husband Edward M. Dyal would later raise their four children in the small community of Mt. Pleasant, Florida.
She attended Mt. Pleasant school, Quincy High School and Chipola Junior College. After her youngest child was enrolled in elementary school she began attending Tallahassee Community College and Florida A&M University where she completed her degree in art and elementary education.
She taught pre-kindergarten through fourth grade at Chattahoochee Elementary for 20 years. After retirement Shirley and Ed moved to Lake Talquin. For the past three years she had resided at Westminster Oaks in Tallahassee where she enjoyed the visiting musicians and exercise classes, most recently participating in a boxing class said to be beneficial for persons with Parkinson’s disease.
She was a self-taught and professionally trained artist who enjoyed painting and pottery. She was a member of the Artist Guild and a longtime supporter of the Gadsden Arts Museum. She was a lifetime member of Glen Julia United Methodist Church.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward M. Dyal and her parents, George Jones and Irma Bevis Jones. She is survived by her loving sister, Kathleen Stewart, her daughters Kathy Dyal Lewis (Woody) of Crawfordville, FL, Alice Dyal Edwards (Buddy), of Pelham, GA, sons Charles Dyal (Cheri), of New Orleans, LA and George Dyal (Rupy), of Tallahassee. She also leaves behind eight grandchildren, Victor Lewis, Cullen, Guthrie, and Robbie Edwards, Bryn and Tom Dyal, Priyam and Georgia Dyal, and one great-granddaughter, Riley Dodd-Lewis.
Visitation will be at Charles McClellan Funeral Home of Quincy (850)627-7677 on Monday, July 31, 2023, from 4:00 to 5:30 PM. The funeral will be held at Glen Julia United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at 11:00 AM.
