Obituary for Robert Leonard Summers
Robert Leonard Summers, 62, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, December 15, 2020, surrounded by his beloved family.

Born on December 4, 1958, in Quincy, Florida, Robert was the son on Frank Leon Summers, and Margaret Eloise Chandler. The oldest of three children, Robert grew up alongside his two sisters, Suzanne and Sandra. From an early age, Robert loved the outdoors, from hunting and fishing with his father and Uncle Bobby, to family camping trips.

In fall of 1975, Robert met the love of his life, Karen Smith, while attending the North Florida Fair with Karen’s brother. The relationship flourished, and on February 17, 1978, the couple married. Their 42-year marriage was a testament to their love and a rare model of commitment and longevity.

After high school, Robert worked at the Higdon Furniture Company for 12 years before starting a 21-year career at the Federal Bureau of Prisons at FCI Marianna. It was this change in careers in 1992 that led Robert and Karen’s move to Marianna, where they would raise their two children Mary Margaret and Lucas.

Described as a “man of few words who touched many,” Mary Margaret and Lucas’s friends adored Big Rob and Mrs. Karen, spending many hours at their home in the country. Fall Saturdays meant game-day parties on the patio, hours of football talk with Andrew, and cheering for Robert’s much-loved Gators. Those who spent time with Robert felt his love and gravitated to the quiet giant with a big heart.

After his retirement from FCI in 2013, Robert refined his golf game, spending 3 days a week walking the course with his buddies, Doyle, Bobby, and Dan.
With retirement, both Robert and Karen made time to escape to two of their favorite places – Disney World and Panama City Beach. The couple frequently made trips to Disney with and without the rest of the family. Donned in Mickey Mouse caps and matching t-shirts, the family cherished their time together at the happiest place on earth. Robert and Karen enjoyed slipping away on romantic getaways weekends to Disney or day dates to Pier Park.

The thing that made Robert complete was when both of his grandchildren were born. He loved Barklee and Eli with all his heart. Of all his accomplishments – which were many – Robert was most proud of his family, immediate and extended. He deeply loved his many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Eloise Summers, along with his sister Sandra Roberts.

Robert leaves behind his Wife Karen, of 42 years, his kids Mary Margaret (Brian) and Lucas (Amanda), two beautiful grandchildren, Barklee and Eli, his sister Suzanne Dove (Tony), and his brother in law Kevin Roberts. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins aunts, uncles, brother in laws, sister in laws, mother and father in law, that he loved and cherished dearly.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, December 17, 2020 at Hillcrest Cemetery in Quincy, Florida at 2pm EST (1pm CST). In lieu of a visitation, after the service, the family will receive family and friends at their home in Marianna to celebrate Robert's life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Charles McClellan Funeral Home, Quincy, FL., is in charge of arrangements.
