Obituary for Richard McCranie Crownover
Quincy native Richard McCranie Crownover passed away on Feb. 7, 2021, at a hospital in Charlotte, N.C., after a brief illness.
Richard was born on Oct. 11, 1936, to Hal and Wilma Shepard Crownover in Quincy, Fla., where he enjoyed a youth centered around Scouts, sports and recreational pursuits. Richard began high school in Florida’s Panhandle and graduated from Atlanta’s Druid Hills High School in 1954. At Georgia Institute of Technology, Richard earned a bachelor’s degree in physics in 1958 and a master’s degree in applied mathematics in 1960. He also was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. At Louisiana State University, Richard completed a doctorate in mathematics in 1964.
Subsequently, Richard joined the mathematics faculty at the University of Missouri, where he researched, taught and performed other professorial duties until his retirement in 1999. He authored the 1995 textbook entitled Introduction to Fractals and Chaos. Richard also served as adviser to aspiring scholars on their doctoral dissertations.
An avid outdoorsman, Richard retired to Florida’s Charlotte Harbor, where he purchased a cabin cruiser and reveled in saltwater fishing. Earlier, Richard organized wilderness camping and canoeing trips in Northeast Minnesota and fishing treks to Missouri trout parks. A former Eagle Scout, Richard also served as an assistant scoutmaster in Missouri. In 2015, he relocated to North Carolina.
Among other hobbies, Richard enjoyed woodworking, photography and playing poker. He also was a voracious reader of newsmagazines and historical accounts. As well, Richard relished watching sports, especially football, and listening to classical music. Likewise, he was especially skilled at household, gardening and mechanical projects.
Richard was predeceased by his sister, Betty Anne Crownover, and his son-in-law, Stephen Elvy. He was survived by sons Richard Crownover of Tennessee and Hal (Caroline) Crownover of North Carolina; daughter Catherine Elvy of New Jersey; and grandchildren Callie Crownover, Beckett Crownover, Christian Elvy and Andrew Elvy.
An interment service will take place in late spring in Quincy, Fla.
