Obituary for Richard Gregory Suber
Richard Gregory Suber, 89, passed away Tuesday, February 23, 2016, at home in Quincy.
He was born February 19, 1927, the youngest of ten children to Elmer Lemuel and Jessie Fletcher Suber. He was raised in the Sawdust Community and graduated from Greensboro High School. Upon turning 18, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served on a ship in the south Pacific during World War II. After his discharge from the service, he returned to Quincy and married his sweetheart Betty Ruth Smith. He was a farmer and grew shade tobacco, peanuts, and soybeans for many years before transitioning into the nursery business.
He was a generous man and a good friend to many. He cared about his community, his church, and especially Robert F. Munroe School. As a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, he served faithfully for over 67 years.
He was a great hunter and sportsman, and he loved the game of golf. An exceptional gardener, he grew beautiful flowers and vegetables that he loved to share with family and friends. Above all, he loved his family and was a great example of how to live life with love and a generous spirit.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty Ruth Smith Suber, his children, Jimmy (Peggy), Greg (Sonja), Beth (Fount May); his grandchildren, Russell Suber (Jennifer), Katie Munroe (Ben), Trey Suber, Brooke Thomas (Lamar), Ashley May (Beth), Richard May (Melissa), Elizabeth May; and 16 great-grandchildren, Bo, Ella, and Brantlee Suber; Weezie, Ginger, and Roxie Munroe; Hayes, Gregory, and Whitt Suber; Hugh and Chase Thomas; David and Jesse May; and Lawre Bradley, Lucy, and Fountain May.
Special thanks to Shirlean Cloud and Big Bend Hospice, and to caregivers Emma Harrell, Jackie McCray, Neather Shaw, and Blanche Williams.
