Obituary for Richard (Dick) L Russell
Richard (Dick) L. Russell, 94, of Quincy Florida, born on December 19, 1927, passed away on March 09, 2022. Dick was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He had a tremendous love for family and friends and a role model to many. He attended Berry Academy in Rome, Georgia where he graduated Valedictorian of his class. After graduation, he served in the US Army during WWII in Japan. Upon his return, he enrolled in the first Coed class at FSU where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Business and Economics. In 1958 he began his work with the Florida State Department of Public Welfare. He went on to earn his master’s degree in social work and became Director of District 2, State Department of Public Welfare. He later served as Sub-District Administrator of Health and Rehabilitative Services. He retired after 30 years of service with the State of Florida. Dick was a devoted Christian and a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Quincy, FL where he served as deacon and in many other capacities over the years. He was an avid fisherman and loved living at Lake Talquin where he could be found fishing from his dock day or night. For over 50 years, he anticipated and enjoyed his extended family reunions at Mexico Beach, FL. He was an avid FSU fan. He took pride in helping to instill the love of fishing, scalloping, and celebrating with family and friends. Dick is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Nordice Sheffield Russell and three sons, Rick (Linda), Al (MaryAnne), and Charles (Debra), five grandchildren, Megan Scileppi (Dominick), Amanda Himmel (Michael), Lindsey Barnhart (Roger), Chase Russell and Jackson Russell, four great grandchildren, Amelia, Russell, Pearl and Palmer. Beloved sister, Betsy Russell Cummings and numerous special nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Hazel Russell, and sister, Emily Russell Brady. The family would like to give a special thank you to Big Bend Hospice and their caregivers for their services over the last several months. The family would also like to thank the Veterans Administration for their loyal support and caretaker Judy McClian for her loving care. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 14, 2022 at the First Baptist Church Quincy, 210 W Washington Street.
