Obituary for Norma Woodward
Norma Sherman Woodward obituary Norma Sherman Woodward died Saturday evening, March 22, 2014, in Naples FL where she had been a resident at the HarborChase of North Collier memory care unit. She was born September 25, 1922, in Memphis TN and grew up in Meridian MS. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Joseph Howard Woodward, her parents John Thomas Sherman and Mary Allen McBride Sherman, and her brother and sister, John Thomas Sherman, Jr. and Mary Jane Sherman Harmon. She graduated from Meridian High School, Meridian, MS in 1940 and took business classes at the local community college. After marriage in February, 1944, and a brief sojourn with her husband at various military facilities where he was stationed, they made their home in Quincy, FL. After her husband's retirement, they moved to Tallahassee FL in 1984 and lived there until January 2006, when they moved to a retirement community on St. Simons Island, GA. After her husband's death, in order to be closer to family, she moved to Naples FL where she lived until her death. Norma was a homemaker who spent most of her time taking care of her children. Her love and affection for them was always evident, particularly her special devotion to her daughter Diana who lived with her, until her care needs were elevated to assisted and memory care in her last years. Her avocations were sewing, with which she became quite skilled, watching her TV "stories," participating in her bridge club, and going on family vacations. She especially liked to travel and see new places. She is survived by her six children: Jane (Bob Wilkinson) of Atlantic Beach, Joseph Allen (Eileen) of Charlotte NC, Thomas Sherman (Dana Williams) of Atlanta GA, David Kent (Linda) of Tallahassee, Frank Norris (Michelle) of Naples, and Diana of Naples; six grandchildren; two step-grandsons; and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 28, at Old Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, with interment at the church cemetery. A visitation with family members will be held Thursday, March 27, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Quincy. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Charles McClellan Funeral Home in Quincy. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to Fellowship Presbyterian Church, 3158 Shamrock St., Tallahassee, FL 32309; First Presbyterian Church, 306 N. Madison St., Quincy, FL 32351; or the Old Philadelphia Endowment Association, Quincy, FL 32351, are suggested.
