Obituary for Nell Meek Russell
Nell Meek Russell, age 88, died on July 20 after a courageous ten-year battle with breast cancer. She is pre-deceased by her parents, Cary and Flora Meek; sister, Dorothy; and brother, Douglas. Mrs. Russell was born, March 7, 1926 in Coffee County, Alabama. In 1944 she moved to Mobile, Alabama, and worked at the Naval Yard repairing airplanes returning from the Pacific and European theaters of war. At the end of WWII she married her high school sweetheart, John C. Russell, her devoted husband of 68 years. They moved to Quincy in 1956 and became active members of the First Baptist Church were she worked for many years in the children and youth ministries. She is survived by her husband John; daughter, Judy Russell Arthur; grandsons Troy Arthur(Tocoi) and David Arthur (Stephanie); great-grandsons Logan, Davin, Conner, Jude, and great-granddaughter Fiona. She is also survived by one niece, Kathy Bozemen (Max) and great-nephews Steven and Charles Bozeman. The family would like to thank Dr. Hugh Vanlandingham, the many doctors and nurses who provided care through the years, and the wonderful angels from Big Bend Hospice, especially Becky, Rex, and Melissa. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 24, in the chapel at First Baptist Quincy, with the Rev. Tom Kennedy officiating. There will be visitation with the family in the church parlor at 10:00 a.m. Memorials may be sent to Big Bend Hospice or First Baptist Church, Quincy. Charles McClellan Funeral Home, Quincy, 850-627-7677, is in charge of arrangements.
