Obituary for Mary Lynn Nelson
Mary Lynn Nelson, 70, died in her sleep from complications of breast cancer on 19 October 2022 at the Big Bend Hospice House in Tallahassee. She is survived by her husband, David Edwin Nelson, her son David James Nelson, her daughter in law Heather Shuke-Nelson, and grandson Carter Cole Nelson. She is also survived by her siblings Lloyddean Carroll, Buddy Kight, David Kight, Denise Reed, and Hettie Wilder. She is preceded in death by her parents Lloyd and Daphine (Roddenberry) Kight, and her brother Buster Kight.
A lifelong Floridian, Mary was born in Dixie County on 8 August 1952. After growing up in Horseshoe Beach, she married David Nelson on 17 November 1968 in Ocala. They lived in Virginia from 1970 to 1976 (where her son and only child was born in 1972). After several years in Jacksonville, Mary and her husband moved to Quincy in 2005. Mary was an avid gardener, extensive reader, lover of gospel and country music, and a friend to all she met.
A public graveside visitation and service will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery in Quincy at 3 and 4 p.m., respectively, on Friday, 21 October. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Gardening Friends of the Big Bend Gardens at https://www.thegfbb.com/give-to-the-gardens.
