Loyd was born August 19, 1935, in Cookville, Tennessee. After graduating from high school he joined the United States Army where he rose to the rank of sargeant. Because of Loyd’s love of cooking he quickly became the battalion Mess Sgt. He was in the same battalion as Elvis Presley who was among the men who were served through his mess hall.
Loyd left the Army and eventually started a career with Sunbeam Bread.
That led him to buy the Tallahassee Arnold Bread and Hostess pastry franchise.
In the mid-1980s he bought the Pepperidge Farm Cookie and Biscuit franchise which he owned until he retired in 2001.
Loyd enjoyed fishing and cattle farming in his retirement.
He was a Mason and for years belonged to the Quincy Lions Club and was very active raising money in both organizations. He also participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Tallahassee with his daughter Tammy Roberts Raker.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Emily Joyce Andrews Roberts, who he married in Live Oak, Florida on Sept 23, 1960; his children, Garry Paul Roberts, Quincy, Florida, and Tammy Roberts Raker (Randall), Bainbridge, Georgia; one grandson, Joshua Roberts; two great-grandsons, Joshua Roberts, Jr. and Garry Roberts, Jr.; a great-granddaughter due in February; one step-grandson, Jason Raker; one sister, Sue Brewington, Lebanon, Tennessee; as well as Emily’s numerous brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.
