In Loving Memory of a Life Well Lived

It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of Leslie F. Jones, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, educator, and friend, who departed this life at the age of 89.

Les, as he was known to his family and friends, is survived by his cherished wife of 67 years, Jo Ann Maynard Jones, whose unwavering love and partnership were the cornerstone of a beautiful life built together. He leaves behind three devoted daughters, Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Jones, Leslie Sharon McMullen, and Julia Jones Shiver, who carry forward his wisdom, kindness, and quiet strength. His legacy extends to his beloved grandchildren, Margaret Ann Baer, Cameron Elizabeth McMullen, Luke Dowling Shiver, and Emily Ann Shiver, and four great-grandsons, who brought him immeasurable joy and pride: William Baer, Thomas Baer, Maximilian Baer, and Zachary Baer.

Les was born in Utica, New York in 1936 to John V. Jones and Lillian Barrett Jones. He graduated from Palm Beach High School and attended Florida State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Science in Education Administration. Les also attended Northern Illinois University and East Carolina College as a participant in National Science Foundation education programs. Les was a member of Sigma Nu and Phi Epsilon Kappa Honorary Fraternity.

A lifelong educator, Les dedicated his career to teaching, mentoring, and leading. Many remember Mr. Jones as a devoted high school coach and teacher of chemistry, biology, and mathematics, before becoming a respected school principal. He proudly served as the defensive coach for two undefeated football teams at Leon High School and Quincy High School.

Whether on the athletic field or in the halls of the school, Mr. Jones inspired students with his competitive spirit, which was always paired with his unwavering patience and compassion. He taught not only skills and academics but also resilience, integrity, and sportsmanship. His colleagues knew him as a steady leader; his students remembered him as the mentor who always took time to listen and encourage; and his community valued him as a man who made schools feel like home.

Les was a proud alumnus of Florida State University and a passionate fan of the FSU Seminoles. Win or lose, he supported the Garnet and Gold with loyalty, enthusiasm, and the same competitive fire he carried throughout his life.

Les had a deep love for jazz, especially classic piano jazz trios that filled his home with warmth and rhythm. He played piano throughout his life, often sitting down to play for family or simply for the peace it brought him. The jazz he loved was expressive, soulful, and improvisational, and it suited his gentle spirit and thoughtful nature. Les was a proud member of the Quincy Music Theater, serving on the Board of Directors and as the organization’s Secretary.

Outside of education, music, and sports, Les found joy in time spent with friends. He enjoyed countless rounds of golf with his friends, finding peace on the greens and fellowship in the game he loved. Les was also fond of riding motorcycles, cherishing the camaraderie and freedom found on scenic backroads. He also devoted himself faithfully to the First Baptist Church of Quincy, where he served with humility and genuine care for others. Over the years, in addition to playing piano, Les served as a deacon, was a member of the choir, and sang in ensembles as well as solos.

Les will be remembered for his gentle heart, steadfast faith, sense of humor, and the way he made every person feel valued. His love for family was his greatest legacy, and the lessons he taught both through his words and his lived example, will carry on for generations.

A life so richly lived is a gift to all who knew him. Leslie Frederick Jones will be deeply missed and forever treasured.

Services will be Thursday, November 20, 2025, at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church in Quincy, FL. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until service time in the Church Sanctuary. Interment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Charles McClellan Funeral Home, Quincy, FL., is in charge of arrangements.
