Obituary for Janice Elizabeth Watson Cantey
Janice Elizabeth Watson Cantey, 96, of Quincy, Florida, passed away at her home on July 9, 2015. Fondly called Miss Elizabeth or Aunt Dibba to all who knew her, she was born November 2, 1918 to the late Marguerite Avant Humphrey and Archibald Walter Watson, Sr. in Gretna, FL. She married Robert Victor Cantey on March 7, 1950 and lived in Quincy, Florida. Miss Elizabeth had many passions and interests to which she dedicated much of her time and talents. She was an active and faithful member of First Presbyterian Church of Quincy serving on the Worship Committee, the Pastor Nominating Committee, and the Presbyterian Women in many capacities and was awarded an Honorary Life Membership. She enjoyed her participation in the Quincy Garden Club and her years playing golf as a member of the Ladies Golf Association. In her earlier years she worked for the Gadsden County School Board as Secretary to the County School Superintendent. In her later years she could be found many days at Fletcher-Cantey Men's Wear working alongside her husband. On Thursday afternoons and weekends she and her family enjoyed their cottage on Lake Talquin. She was a wonderful mother and role model to her two daughters and grandchildren. She dearly loved and celebrated her family, her faith in the Lord, and friendship to those who knew her. She is survived by her two daughters: Janice Carol Curry (John Shaw) Quincy and Alice Logan Adams (Frank) Pensacola, and four grandchildren: Amy Curry Daniel (Allan) Cumming, GA, Ramsey Curry Lawrence (Brantlee) Seagrove Beach, FL, Victor Adams (Christy) Memphis, TN, and Elizabeth Adams Branch (Eric) Pensacola, FL and nine great grandchildren: Emma and Benjamin Daniel; Lawson, Logan, Clay, and Evelyn Lawrence; Lily Montague and Ella Adams; and Jack Branch. She also leaves behind her devoted brother and sister Archibald Walter Watson, Jr. of Gretna and Harriett W. Melvin of Aiken, SC. and many loving nieces and nephews. Miss Elizabeth was preceded in death by her dear husband Robert Victor Cantey in 1982, and sisters Sarah Margaret Johnson, Hazel Virginia Suber, Marian Esther Fletcher, and Martha Carol Smith. The family extends a special thank you to her present caregivers and loyal friends whom she loved and her family dearly loves: Betty Daniels, Joe Hughes, Peggy George, Misty Vanbenthuysen, Candace Hill, Martha Cobb, Bonnie Stanley, Linda Beach, and Karen Hudson. Visitation will be at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall July 11, 2015 at 12:00 Noon with a service following at 1:00 PM at the Church. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
