James Ray Auman, 94 of Quincy, Florida died Friday, May 1, 2026, at his home, surrounded by family.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Friday, May 8, 2026, at 4 PM in Quincy followed by a reception in the church Parish Hall. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 10 W King St, Quincy, FL 32351.
Jimmy was born in Bainbridge, Georgia on July 1, 1931, to Ruth Marie (Thompson) and Elko Elijah Auman. He grew up in Quincy, graduating from Gadsden High School. He was elected vice president of the senior class, president of the student council, and a star among many stars on the high school football team that went 10-0 during the 1948 season.
After high school, Jimmy joined the United States Air Force serving four years, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. His assignments included Sampson Air Force Base in Geneva, New York and Bowling Air Force Base in Washington D.C.
On June 4, 1952, Jimmy married his high school sweetheart, Mary Stuart Bostick at St Paul’s Episcopal Church in Quincy. They were married for 59 years until Mary Stuart passed away in 2011.
Jimmy is survived by his three children, Ray Auman (Peggy) of Thomasville, Georgia; Sarah Stuart Auman of Blue Ridge, Georgia; and Lamar Auman (Kelly) of Union Grove, Alabama; five grandchildren, Ben Auman (Kindall), Emily Auman, Lee Auman, Sarah Margaret Cox (Brenden), and Jon Auman (Noelle); three great grandchildren, Eliza, Henry, and Calvin; and nephew John Parks (Nick). Jimmy was proceeded in death by his wife, Mary Stuart; parents Elko Auman and Ruth Thompson Diehl; sister-in-law, Nancy Bostick Parks; brother-in-law, Robert Parks; nephew, Ben Parks, and grandson, James Cullen Auman.
Jimmy was a merchant and entrepreneur, working at Farmer’s Hardware, Albany Hardware, Gadsden Office Equipment, and Town & Country Real Estate. Jimmy was a servant to his community and Church encouraging gentle growth and development in all his endeavors. For his local community, he served as president of the Quincy Jaycees, founding member of the Quincy Music Theatre and Gadsden Arts, and many other projects for the betterment of his community.
Jimmy served the Episcopal Church at both the Parish and Diocesan level. In addition to serving as usher, lay reader, and leading services when the rector was absent, Jimmy was Senior Warden and vestry member at St. Paul’s for many years. He was a 2009 graduate of The University of the South School of Theology Education for Ministry program. At the Diocesan level, he attended Cursillo #1 and later served as Cursillo Director in the Diocese. He was a recipient of the 2010 Bishop’s Cross Award. He was elected to attend many Diocesan Conventions as well as a delegate to General Convention LXIX and LXX.
He lived his life with faithful purpose and unwavering commitment to his family, his church, and his community.
