Obituary for James Buford (Jimmy) McPherson
James Buford (Jimmy) McPherson,82, of Tallahassee, Florida, was born March 9, 1933, in Quincy, Florida and passed away August 16, 2015 in Tallahassee. Jim was married to his loving wife, Rachel Perritt McPherson, for 52 years. Jim was born to Rivers Buford McPherson and Lucile Searcy McPherson, both deceased, and grew up in Quincy, Florida. In 1964, he moved to Tampa for 17 years and returned to Tallahassee in 1981 where he resided for 34 years. After high school, Jim trained as an electrician and opened the family business, McPherson Electric Co., in Quincy at the age of 20. He turned the company over to his Dad and Brother at the age of 26 to begin a career in law enforcement. Jim joined the Gadsden County Sheriff's Department in 1959 as a Deputy to Sheriff Otho Edwards. Three years later, he began a 34 year career with the State of Florida. Jim worked for the State Beverage Department for 22 years and moved up the ranks from Agent to a District Supervisor position. He then served as the State Director of Capital Police for 12 years. Jim retired in 1995. He served in the United States National Guard for 10 years. Jim was actively involved in an array of fraternal organizations. He started as a teenager and served as Master Counselor in the Angus Hinson Chapter of the DeMolay in Quincy. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and was a Past Worshipful Master of the A. W. Windhorst Lodge in Tampa. He was also a member of the Royal Order of Jesters. As a member of the Shrine. Jim served as President of the Egypt Temple Shrine on the Director's Staff in Tampa, served on the Board of Governors of the Shriner's Hospital for Children, and was Past Potentate (2000) of the Marzuq Shrine Temple in Tallahassee. He was a member and Acolyte of the Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Tallahassee. Jim received a Bachelor's degree from St. Leo College and a Masters Degree from Nova University, both in criminal justice. He also studied theology at the University of the South for 2 years. In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by Missy, his beloved and loyal dachshund, a brother, Bobby McPherson (Virginia) of Quincy, Fl., a sister, Susan McPherson Kirby, of Clearwater, Fl., 18 nieces and nephews, and 6 first cousins. Services will be held Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Thomas Memorial Baptist Church, 1001 W. Washington St., Quincy, FL. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until service time at the church. Interment will be at 1:30 PM at Concord Cemetery, Concord, FL. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Children. Charles McClellan Funeral Home, Quincy, FL., (850) 627-7677, is in charge of arrangements. ________________________________________________________________.
