Evelyn Jean Gard Fletcher Obituary April 20, 2015 Subject: Evelyn Jean Gard Fletcher From: Mary Fletcher Meloni To: Barbara McClellan Date: April 21, 2015 Evelyn Jean Gard, 87, passed away at Big Bend Hospice, Tallahassee, Florida, on Monday, April 20, 2015, after a series of illnesses over the past few months. She was born January 24, 1928, in Lavonia, Georgia, the first child of Guy Taylor Gard and Edna Aderhold Gard. Jean was the oldest of their five daughters. After graduating from Leon High School, Tallahassee, Florida, class of 1946, she attended Florida State University for one semester. She then decided to seek employment and worked at Lewis State Bank, Tallahassee, Florida, where she met her future husband, Hal Duncan Fletcher, Sr., of Greensboro, Florida. They were married on December 12, 1948. Married life began and Jean became mother to Hal's two small children, Duncan and Kay, after the passing of their mother, Frances Suber Fletcher. Five additional children were born over the next twenty years, and Jean remained at home to care for them. Jean returned to the work environment in 1968. She began part-time employment with the Quincy Red Cross in 1968, later moving to the Veterans Administration Office, and finally to an administrative position within the offices of Gadsden County. She retired in 1994. She was an avid reader and thus a loyal volunteer and supporter of the Quincy Library, eventually going on to serve on local and national boards in support of library services, providing congressional testimony in support of that function. She was a devoted member of Centenary United Methodist Church, where she participated and volunteered in countless projects for over sixty years. Jean was instrumental in the creation of the Gadsden Arts Center. Art appreciation, one of her passions, was realized by her support of many beginning and established local artists. Jean had a large, warm personality, who touched the lives of so many and that few forgot. She was always there to lend a hand to someone in need. She enjoyed cooking and was revered among family and friends as an expert cook. She loved decorating and entertaining in her home and at other venues for special events. Coming from and marrying into a large family, family life was paramount to everything, and as long as she was able, she tried to be at every family function. She especially enjoyed playing cards and drinking coffee with her large group of friends. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother serving as the matriarch of her family. She and Hal were married for almost sixty-four years at the time of his death in 2012. Her days were filled with joy and pride in her family. She was most proud and instrumental in ensuring that each of her seven children obtained a college degree and became a contributing community member. Jean is survived by: Hal Duncan Fletcher, Jr. (Carole); Mary Fletcher Meloni (Alberto); Dr. Taylor Gard Fletcher (Elizabeth); Thomas Bertelle Fletcher, III (Denise); David Mark Fletcher (Martha) and Jean Milicent Fletcher; thirteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her four sisters: Katherine Fisher of Lumberton, NC (Karl, deceased); Dr. Nancy Wingenbach (Ed, deceased), Chagrin Falls, Ohio; Eleanor Clemons (Lamar), and Jane Montford (Bill), both of Tallahassee, FL; and many nieces and nephews on both the Gard and Fletcher sides of her family. Additionally, she is survived by brothers-in-law Dr. T. Bert Fletcher, Jr., Tallahassee, and H. Maxwell Fletcher, Sr., Greensboro, FL, and son-in-law Dr. Randall Kincaid, Davidson, NC. She is predeceased by her parents, Guy and Edna Gard, Tallahassee, Florida, and her daughter, Kay Kincaid of Davidson, NC. The family wants to thank Big Bend Hospice and Hilda Garcia for the wonderful care given during her illness. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, Robert F. Munroe Day School, Big Bend Hospice, or the charity of your choice. The funeral service will be held at Centenary United Methodist Church, Quincy, Florida, Friday, April 24, 2015 at 11:00 AM.
