Obituary for Eleanor Haire Puckett
Eleanor Haire Puckett, 96, of Tallahassee, Fl. died on May 31, 2022 after an extended illness. Eleanor was born on August 22, 1925 to Lillie Johnson Haire and Lee Drew Haire in Hardaway, Fl. She was one of eight children and a seventh generation Floridian. She was married to Craig Austin Puckett, Jr. who predeceased her in 1989. Eleanor graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1944 and attended Florida State College for Women (now Florida State University) for one year, after which she attended Lively Technical School. She then went to work for the Florida Department of Transportation for a period of forty two consecutive years. For the latter half of her career she was an executive secretary. She loved her job and the many people she worked with.
Eleanor had no children but was like a second mother to her twin sister's daughter Lisa Spooner. Eleanor was a member of the Gretna Baptist Church and enjoyed going there until her health no longer permitted her to do so. She was also a member of Trinity Methodist Church in Tallahassee along with her husband while he lived. Eleanor enjoyed decorating her home and working in her yard and cooking. She participated in bake sales at Consulate Health Care for years by providing her delicious coconut pies.
Eleanor is survived by two sisters, her twin sister Erline Spooner of Quincy and Betty Jo Lester (husband Charles) of Tallahassee, and nieces and nephews: Lisa Spooner of Tallahassee, Chuck Lester (wife Tami) of Monticello, Dr. Robert Suber (wife Chris) of Clemmons, N.C., Jerry Suber of Quincy, Ron Poppell (wife Wanda) of Havana, Dr. Tim Poppell (wife Maggie) of Longwood, Fl., Jim Brewster of Tallahassee, Mike Barnhill (wife Allison) of Charlotte, N.C., Steve Barnhill of Lexington, N.C., Scott Barnhill (wife Lisa) of Raleigh, N.C. and Carol Templeton (husband Scott) of Winston-Salem, N.C. and great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Craig Austin Puckett, Jr., her parents Drew and Lillie Haire, her sisters Annette Haire Suber, Dorothy Haire, Jenelle Poppell, Carolyn Haire Barnhill, a brother Alexander, and nieces Laura Lester and Regina Brewster.
Funeral services will be on Saturday June 4, 2022 at 11:00 am at Gretna Baptist Church with burial at Sunnydell Cemetery in Gretna, Fl. Visitation will be at 10:00 am at the church. Masks are optional. Memorial gifts may be made to Big Bend Hospice of Tallahassee. The family extends special thanks to caregivers Shirley Nealy and others who provided loving care during her illness, and to Billy Lee for his help to her through the years.
