Doris Carter Bassett, 93, of Quincy, Florida passed away in her home surrounded by her loving family on June 13th, 2023. She was born in Tarver, Georgia and grew up in Jasper, Florida.
Doris received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Shorter College in Rome, Georgia in 1952. She worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority before returning to Florida. She worked several years for the State of Florida promoting tourism.
Doris was introduced to Harry Bassett by her childhood best friend and future sister-in-law, Jane Sapp Bassett. She and Harry married in 1957 and enjoyed 35 years of marriage. She worked for the sheriff's department as a bookkeeper until 1995. After retirement she enjoyed traveling with her dear sister-in-law, Mary Emma Bassett.
Doris treasured her family and selflessly devoted herself to caring for them. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and was always up for a game of cards. She loved all sports as both a participant and as a viewer; especially her beloved Florida Gators. She was an amazing cook and much of what she cooked was harvested from the family garden. She spent many summers putting up vegetables, juices and jellies that were enjoyed throughout the year. Many friends will always remember the delicious peanut brittle that was a signature gift of hers. She had a passion for her yard and made it into a beautiful landscape of flowers, trees and shrubs.
Doris was an active member of Gretna Baptist Church where she was treasurer for over 30 years. Her church was her second family, having many lifelong cherished friends.
