Obituary for Donald Maxwell Wood

Donald Wood 10-24-36 to 8-17-23

Donald Maxwell Wood passed away Thursday, August 17, 2023, at the age of 86 at his home. He was able to stay in his own home with a wonderful team of Big Bend Hospice workers. He is survived by his wife, Sandy, and five children: Debbie & (Bob), Teresa & (Chris), Charlie & (Marie), Dorinda & (Bob), Marlene & (Edmond), 6 grandchildren (Haley, Katie, Max, Lynn, Karla & Charlie) and 1 great-granddaughter (Vivienne). He had many fury companions through the years but his last two, Josie and Susie, were with him to the end.

Born October 24, 1936, in Calhoun County, FL. He was the son of Charlie C. and Nettie Pitts Wood. He had four brothers and one sister that preceded in death, Frank, C.B, Ronal, Joe, and Betty Doyle. Surviving siblings are Francis Price and Linda Graham.

He graduated from Blountstown HS in 1955 and in 1956 graduated from the University of Florida Forest Ranger School. After graduation, he began a 42-year career with St. Joe Paper Co.

After retirement his passion was traveling. He purchased an Airstream travel trailer in 2001 and has traveled to all 50 states. Twice to Alaska and through much of Canada.

Donald was a man that could fix or build anything. He loved to rebuild old tractors and even built his own log cabin for his family. If you needed something he was always there. He was a man with huge heart and a kind spirit. He never knew a stranger. He would give you the shirt off his back.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10AM on August 26th at his favorite place in the world, his pecan orchard at his home at 1820 Chaires Cross Road, Tallahassee Fl, 32317, where he spent his last years enjoying sitting on his porch watching and feeding his birds. He enjoyed his last days admiring his back yard enjoying the gifts of god’s work.

The Family will be receiving friends after the ceremony around the corner at 8337 Shenandoah Drive Tallahassee FL, 32317 for refreshments.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Big Bend Hospice of Tallahassee.

Charles McClellan Funeral Home, Quincy, Florida, 850-627-7677.
