Obituary for Colleen Brown Bishop
Colleen Bishop Colleen Brown Bishop, devoted and beloved wife, mother, and MeMa-grandmother, died Wednesday, June 24, 2015, in her home shared with her life-long love, husband, and best friend, Grinelle (Sonny) Bishop. She was 88. Colleen was born in Walton County on June 12, 1927 to her much loved parents, Oscar Lee and Veda Brown. She was one of five children born to Lee and Veda and some of her fondest memories were of her experiences growing up in her family. Colleen and Sonny met in Ponce de Leon Springs, FL, when he moved there to work upon graduation from college and they were married on November 30, 1951. She always said, "It was love at first sight", a love that continued unbroken and unshaken for almost 65 years. They moved to Quincy, FL in 1953, where Sonny continued his career as an educator and Colleen devoted herself to creating a warm and welcoming home for their family. Colleen was a woman of immense love and great faith. She lived her faith and her life was a wonderful example for her children, family and friends. She and Sonny joined the First Baptist Church in Quincy in 1953, where she was active in church activities, singing in the choir, working in the nursery Sunday School, and visiting friends and neighbors to provide comfort and help in times of illness and loss of loved ones. Colleen loved her family completely and unconditionally. She was an active presence in the lives of her two children in every way: listening, caring, encouraging, supporting, and correcting when needed. She became a grandmother in 1984, and was named "MeMa" by her grandson. She delighted in her grandchildren and welcomed every opportunity to be part of their lives. She believed in the best of her children and grandchildren and lovingly shared old stories from her childhood, gracious wisdom, and infectious laughter. Colleen had a passion for college football; she was a die-hard Gator fan, watching every game possible with running comments about the teams' abilities on the field. She understood the details of the game, the players and coaches. It was common during football season to find her in front of the TV all day and into the night on Saturdays. She was a fan of other college sports as well, keeping up with basketball and baseball teams and activities. Colleen, Mama, MeMa-grandmother will be sorely missed. Our Lord welcomed her home and angels sang. She is in our hearts, minds and lives and we will see her again when the time comes. "Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her: Many daughters have done well, But you excel them All." (Proverbs 31:28-29) Colleen is survived by her husband, Grinelle (Sonny) Bishop, her daughter, Connie Bishop Reinhardt (William "Bill"), her son, Edward Bishop (Beth), her grandchildren, Spencer Reinhardt, Bailey Reinhardt, Ashlyn Bishop and Drake Bishop, and her sister, Leveda Brown (Austin). She is also survived by many nieces and nephews as well as a host of close friends. The family will receive visitors on Saturday, June 27, from 10:00 -11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, 210 W. Washington St, in Quincy. Funeral services will follow at the Church with Dr. Harry Kinchen officiating. Interment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Spencer Reinhardt, Bailey Reinhardt, Drake Bishop, Marty Bishop, Ben Bishop and Sam Brown. All members of the First Baptist Church are respectfully requested to act as Honorary Pallbearers. Charles McClellan Funeral Home, Quincy, FL., (850) 627-7677, is in charge of the arrangements.
