Obituary for Charles William Bassett
Charles McClellan Funeral Home, Quincy, FL., (850) 627-7677, is in charge of arrangements. Charles William Bassett was born May 25, 1925, and passed away quietly in his sleep on February 25, 2014. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in Company A 801st MP BN in the Phillipines. He loved his country, he loved his family, he loved his friends and the history of this area. He was a farmer, an entrepreneur, and a great story-teller. He built the building where West End Grille is now, and established Quincy Tractor Company there in the 1940's. He raised Angus Cattle and layer hens, grew tomatoes, squash, and beans for the market, and farmed shade tobacco for years. He retired from the Quincy Post Office in 1997. He kept us all smiling at his jokes and inspired us all with his work ethic and steadfastness. He was married for over 60 years, and is survived by, the love of his life, Mary Emma (Cowen). He is survived by his children, Susan Bassett of St. George Island, Ben (Rosa) Bassett of West Palm Beach, and Walker (Debbie) Bassett of Perry, and by his grandchildren Laura (Stephen) Madsen, Will, Benjamin, Katelyn, and Rachel Bassett, Susi (Ron) Hobgood, 3 great-grandchildren and a host of loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Bill, his brothers Harry, Al, and Walker, Jr., and by his parents Irene and Walker Bassett. Service is today, Thursday, February 27, 2014, at 11:00 AM at Gretna Baptist Church, Gretna , FL., with interment at Sunny Dell Cemetery. Visitation was held Wednesday night. Charles McClellan Funeral Home, Quincy, FL., (850) 627-7677, is in charge of arrangements.
