Charles Audry Butler, 101, of Tallahassee passed away on June, 30, 2024. He was born on December 7, 1922, in Gadsden County, Florida to Charles Wesley Butler and Ella Johnson Butler. He joined the Navy December 4, 1940 just before his 18th birthday, and served for 22 years during World War II and the Korean War, where he was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and later in San Diego, California. Charles served on the Cruisers USS Louisville, USS Twining, and USS Porterfield in the Pacific Theatre. During his Naval career, Charles received numerous recognitions, medals, badges, and commendations, and retired in 1962 with the rank of Chief Gunners Mate. Charles later worked for the Driver’s License division with the Florida Department of Highway Safety for 22 years, and fully retired in 1984.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Blondean Paul Butler, his three sisters, Ruby B. Balthaser, Opal B. Crews, and Jewell Blount, and stepson, Wayne Keele. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Hilda Ann Butler, his two children, Ralph Warren Butler of San Destin, Florida, daughter Linda Diane McCall (Mike) of Buda, Texas, and grandson Toby Martin of Crestview, Florida. He is also survived by two stepsons, Richard D. Keele of Wewahitchka, Florida, William Milton Keele of Gulf Breeze, Florida, stepdaughter-in-law Suzanne Keele, and several extended grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Charles loved his family and friends. He was a member at Seminole Baptist Church, where he served as a “welcome greeter”, and relished attending the Senior Sunday School class.
The family offers special thanks to the godsend of special caregivers, Gabby, Kathy, Cindy, Laura, Raymonda, Betsy, and Angie. They worked around the clock to care for Charles to ensure he was never left alone. Family is also grateful for the care received from Canterfield Assisted Living and its caregivers, as well as Big Bend Hospice of Tallahassee.
Visitation will be at Seminole Baptist Church on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. with service to follow at 11:00 a.m. He will be laid to rest at Hillcrest Cemetery in Quincy, Florida. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Seminole Baptist Church or Big Bend Hospice.
