Obituary for Carol Ann Penrose



Carol Haslam Penrose, 86, passed away at her home in Tallahassee, FL. on April 13, 2023. Carol had a lifelong interest in Florida's environment, contributing to its preservation in her professional role before she retired.

Carol was born March 21, 1937 in Cincinnati, OH to Harry and Florence Miller. The family moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL in 1950. Carol married her first husband, Jack Haslam, in 1956 and they moved to Tallahassee, FL in 1958. They had two daughters, Mari and Stacey. Jack and Carol divorced in 1974.

Carol married her second husband, William Penrose, in 1979 and they were married until his death in 2006.

Carol was an active homemaker before entering the Real Estate field in the early 1970’s, when she joined Petrandis Realty in Tallahassee. She narrowed her focus to the title insurance industry, working for Tallahassee Title Company as a closing agent. In 2000, she became the Senior Legal Assistant for The Florida Trust for Public Land. She worked to save and preserve thousands of acres of valuable and historically sensitive properties throughout the State of Florida for the Public Trust and was well respected in her profession. She retired in 2009.

Carol absolutely loved Bluegrass music, was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening and cooking unusual recipes. She volunteered for Sew for Hope and the Leon County Senior Center.

She is preceded in death by former husband, Jack Haslam, and husband William Penrose, sister Barbara Keys and son-in-law Clay VanLandingham. Survivors include daughters Mari VanLandingham (Quincy, FL), Stacey McKnight (Jackson, GA), granddaughter Amanda Handley, grandsons Patrick VanLandingham, Bryce Haupt and Logan Haupt and three great granddaughters; Juliet, Anna and Blakely.

Memorial service arrangements are incomplete at this time. Charles McClellan Funeral Home (Quincy, FL). Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Project Tallahassee, FL or Big Bend Hospice.
