Obituary for Betty Lou Shelfer
After a full and adventuresome life, Betty Lou Shelfer, 91, of Havana, Florida passed away Friday morning at Westminster Oaks, surrounded by her family. She was born on August 19, 1923 at her family home in Havana, Florida. After graduating from Havana High School, she graduated from the Florida State College for Women in 1945, with a degree in Psychology and Social Work. At FSCW, she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta. She enjoyed tennis, golf, and traveling. She was a long-time Seminole Booster, and an avid fan of all FSU athletics. She had a quick wit, often accompanied by a twinkling eye, and a sharp sense of humor. She also loved playing bridge. To the amazement of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she could summon Santa Claus to her Havana home (almost) every Christmas Eve family dinner, without ever batting an eye. She is survived by her sons, Fred (Susan); Jim (Kathy); Steve; Bruce (Lynne); her daughter, Penelope (Michael Heinze); her grandchildren, Jason (Jana) Shelfer; Bo (Laurie) Shelfer; Clay (Colleen) Shelfer; Drew (Michelle) Shelfer; Brooke (Hugh) Lochore; Griffin Shelfer; Sommer (Joby) Blackburn; Jennifer (Seam Park) Shelfer; Carmen (Derek) Giddon; 12 great-grandchildren and another one on the way; and a wide extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Fred Griffin Shelfer, Sr.; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Boynton Sr.; her dear sister, Sara Lee "Sister" Spencer; and her brother W.J. (Bill) Boynton, Jr. The funeral will be held on Sunday, June 7th at 3:00 p.m. at the Shelfer Family Cemetery in Havana, Florida. Charles McClellan Funeral Home of Quincy is handling the services. The family will greet friends and family at the home of Claude and Shari Arrington following the service.
