Bessie Matthews Butler, 83, of Quincy passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at home. She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Joe M. Butler. Bessie was born on March 3, 1934 in Tallahassee, FL, to William and Hester Matthews. She grew up in Tallahassee where she graduated from Leon High School in 1952. While attending Lively Vocational School, Bessie met the love of her life, Joe. They were married on December 27, 1953. They moved to Miami for the first year of marriage, then moved to Quincy, where Joe started farming.
Bessie was a wonderful wife, mother, and homemaker helping her husband raise four children in the countless blessings of farm life. She was known for the incredible meals she prepared which always included fresh, frozen or canned vegetables from the farm.
Bessie was an active member of First Baptist Church of Quincy for over 60 years. She taught Sunday School in the Children’s Department for many years, but found her true calling teaching Sunday School to adult Ladies for over 30 years. Her love of God and her faithfulness as a Prayer Warrior were a testimony to all those who knew her.
Bessie is survived by her children, Susan Stanford (Don); Martha Kirkland (Bruce); and Rob Butler (Lexdi) of Tallahassee; Rev. Joey M. Butler (Aimee) of Wauchula. She and Joe were blessed with 12 grandchildren, Joe Butler, Matthew Stanford, Greg Butler, Myles (Nicole) Stanford, Lacey Kirkland, Lydia (Kenny) Wood, Will Stanford, Sam Kirkland, Lauren Butler, Kelxy Butler, Keara Butler and Kylee Butler as well as one great-grandson, Aaron Stanford. She is also survived by numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Bessie is predeceased by her sisters, Corine Tomberlin, Doris Murphy, and Jean Plonowski; a brother, Bill Matthews; and also by a grandson, John Brett Butler.
Visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday, May 25, 2017 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church of Quincy. The service will be at 11 a.m., Friday, May 26, 2017, at First Baptist Church, Quincy, FL, with burial at Hillcrest Cemetery.
