Obituary for Bascom Logan Mahaffey
Bascom Logan Mahaffey, 89, of Quincy, Florida, passed away on September 7, 2017. He was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and later moved to Richmond Hill, Georgia, where he graduated from Richmond Hill High School. He earned a B.S. in Agriculture from the University of Georgia and a M.S. degree from the Florida State University. He began teaching vocational agriculture to veterans, then worked for Talquin Electric Cooperative for 17 years, retiring as Member Services Director to begin a second career in education. When James A. Shanks High School was established, he organized the industrial arts department and taught drafting and shop for several years. When Gadsden County Vocational/Technical School was established, he was hired to organize and staff the new facility and manage the school as principal; concurrently, he served as Gadsden County Vocational Education Director until his retirement in 1988. Bascom served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves, gaining the rank of First Lieutenant in a combat engineer brigade.
He taught Sunday School for many years at the Florida State Prison in Quincy, and at First Baptist Church, Quincy, where he also served as a deacon.
Bascom was predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth Holz Cahill. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty Timmons Mahaffey, and his children: Barbara Craig (Mike) of Lutz, FL, Lane Mahaffey (Janice) of Lutz, FL, Beth Frith (Jim) of Black Mountain, NC, and Lynn Skelton (Brad) of Crescent City, FL; two brothers: John Fulton Mahaffey of Palmyra, VA, and Ernest Mahaffey (Sheila) of Chicago, IL; nine grandchildren: Allison Craig Zealy (Marshall), Rachel Hires (Matt), Logan Mahaffey, Erin Frith, Mary Frith, Bobby Frith, Joseph Frith, Sarah Benedict (Gary), and Cliff Skelton; and one great-grandchild: Kathryn Jayne Benedict. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Bobby Timmons Yon of Tallahassee, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Bascom was attended by devoted and beloved caregivers, Elouise Lowe, Laura Safford, and Mary Bunion.
A celebration of life service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on September 17, 2017, at First Baptist Church, Quincy. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to First Baptist Church, Quincy, Big Bend Hospice, or the charity of one’s choice.
